Why My Name is a Public Embarrassment

When I typed "Olivia meaning" into Google roughly twenty seconds ago, I was absolutely delighted to see that my name was listed under an article title "15 Terrible Baby Name Meanings" *note the sarcasm*. My name literally means "olive branch" in Latin. However, the English translation is the feminine version of the name Oliver, which means "elf army." That is right. Elf army. So basically my name is the absolute worst. I dug deeper, however, and I learned that an olive branch is used to represent perpetual peace. I think that this does represent me, because while I am very loud and outgoing, I always make it my mission to be kind to everyone I meet, and I think that part of me does show how I express perpetual peace in my life. As for the "elf army" translation, one time I convinced this girl that I was an actual leprechaun, and I wore the same green shirt for two weeks to prove it, but that is about as far as that goes. I think I am best represented by Olivia the Pig, however, because she is an Olivia that is popular in pop culture, and she represents humor, kindness, sassiness, and occasional failure, which I think are all aspects of my personality.
I think that I do have two identities, and those personalities are "Olivia" and "Liv." At school and most public functions, I am Olivia, an outgoing, bubbly person, whose humor can very often be mistaken for stupidity (not saying that I am a genius, but I am not a complete dummy!) I think that I am most often known for being silly and, and Mr. Nolan once said, "so nice that it kinda screws up humanity." I am happy with the way that I treat people, and I am happy that I am able to act like my true self and not have everyone hate me. At home, however, I am "Liv," who is still a part of me, but "Liv" is definitely not silly and bubbly all of the time. When I am around my family, I am much more reserved and more serious. While I have a lot more fun being "Olivia," I am much more relaxed being "Liv." Both are a part of who I am, and I would not be able to fully be myself unless I felt comfortable enough around people to be able to show both sides of myself to them.

  1. It is good that you are keeping a consistent tone throughout the passage #goodwork. Also my name is the name of a toilet, so do not sell yourself short being an olive branch. I like how you connected that meaning back to who you are as a person too.

  2. This was actually kind of...cute I guess is the word. The way you wrote it was very much true to yourself, very light hearted and kind of funny. I agree with John, I like how you connected your name with your "personal mission" to make people happier and to create peace. I also like how you compared yourself to different Olivia's that was cool to.

  3. First off, love the picture AND the entertaining humor/sarcasm. I think it's great that you didn't stop at olive branch and chose to dig deeper to really expose the Latin meaning of your name, because it adds a lot to your explanation and connects to your personality really well. I also like the contrast that you found between your social self and your more serious attitude when at home; I think that's an aspect that a lot of people can empathize with and see within themselves, especially when they're at school among friends all day and then go home to a quieter setting. Awesome post!!!
